265 WEST 45TH STREET OFFICE TOWER IN NEW YORK BY RB SYSTEMS ( RUSTEM BAISHEV ARCHITECT )

The project explores a novel and captivating tower typology which emerged in New York in the last years “The New York’s Super Slender”. Located on a small, currently vacant site on West 45th St which footprint measures at approx. 30x30m only, the tower rises to 400 m in height, and provides modern, ergonomic, sustainable office spaces for multi-floor corporate tenants. The project is another take on a path which skyscraper design will likely be following in the coming years, to meet extreme challenges of constrained and dense city centers, with their shortage of big vacant lots, yet ever-growing demand for new properties.

This futuristic tower in New York embodies a design approach where form is directly driven by structural innovation. Built on a highly constrained site, it replaces traditional perimeter columns with a network of twisting steel cables that create a lightweight yet robust structural system. This spiral configuration generates surface tension, acting like a structural “corset” that stabilizes the building while defining its distinctive appearance.

The architecture expresses this system through a sleek cylindrical volume clad in reflective glass, optimizing wind resistance while reinforcing a minimalist and technology-driven aesthetic. Advanced solutions such as circulating elevators and automated visitor management systems enhance efficiency and support high-density office use.

Designed as a striking urban landmark, the tower contributes to the dynamic identity of its surroundings with reflective materials, fluid geometry, and a strong visual presence that elevates the streetscape. The entrance is marked by a dramatic “Halo” canopy, a suspended toroidal structure in glass and chrome that captures attention and creates an inviting, futuristic threshold.

Inside, a multi-story lobby introduces a refined, technology-oriented environment that transitions from the dense urban context into bright, open office spaces. At the top, an observation deck offers unobstructed 360-degree views, providing a calm and immersive experience above the city.

The high-performance façade, developed using parametric design tools, consists of triangular glass panels engineered to maximize daylight while minimizing thermal gain. Integrated ventilation systems and precisely angled surfaces further enhance environmental performance and occupant comfort.

Workspaces are designed with flexibility and well-being in mind, featuring ergonomic sit-stand furniture suspended for easy adjustment and reconfiguration. Digital communication systems support seamless collaboration across multiple floors.

To ensure structural stability, the tower incorporates an innovative toroidal tuned mass damper that surrounds the core, effectively reducing wind-induced motion without compromising internal functionality.

Founded by Rustem Baishev, RB Systems approaches architecture as a field of systems engineering, creating high-performance buildings that integrate advanced technologies, energy efficiency, and new spatial typologies. The firm’s work has been recognized by organizations such as NASA and SpaceX.
