Located in Santo Tirso, in Portugal, NG House by Arquitectos Anónimos, led by Maria Veloso and Vasco Aragão, embodies the architectural principle of “less is more” through a refined and highly contextual design approach.
This compact rural house demonstrates how minimalist architecture can achieve both elegance and performance, without compromising spatial quality. The project establishes a strong relationship with its surroundings by reusing local materials and referencing traditional construction techniques from northern Portugal, particularly the dry-stone walls found in shepherd settlements known as 'brandas'.
The building rests on a solid stone base, anchoring it to the landscape, while a lightweight timber-clad volume sits above like a protective second skin. Large double-glazed openings frame the surrounding environment, creating a direct and immersive connection between interior and exterior.
The interior is conceived as an open-plan living space, organized around two functional cores: one dedicated to water (bathroom), the other to fire (kitchen). This simple yet efficient layout allows for maximum flexibility and adaptability of the remaining space.
From a construction perspective, the project relies on a lightweight steel structure (IPN), insulation, and timber cladding, enabling fast assembly and efficient building processes. The result is a project that is simple, precise, and highly effective, where attention to detail and material juxtaposition define its architectural quality.
NG House stands as a compelling example of contemporary minimal architecture rooted in tradition, where simplicity becomes a powerful design statement.
