SAN JORGE CHURCH AND PARISH CENTRE | CONTEMPORARY RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURE BY TABUENCA LEACHE

The San Jorge Church and Parish Centre, designed by Tabuenca & Leache Architects, is a landmark example of contemporary religious architecture in Spain. Located in the San Jorge district of Pamplona, the project combines a church, chapel, parish centre and community spaces within a powerful monolithic concrete structure.

Completed in 2008, the building is recognized for its minimalist language, raw materiality and exceptional use of natural light. Inspired by the principles of sacred architecture, the project creates a contemplative atmosphere through exposed concrete walls, controlled openings and carefully designed spatial sequences.

The complex is organized around a central atrium that connects the church to the surrounding urban fabric while providing a transition between public and spiritual space. Inside, light becomes the primary architectural element, illuminating the nave through skylights and translucent alabaster surfaces.

With its sculptural geometry and restrained palette, the San Jorge Church stands as a reference in modern ecclesiastical architecture, combining brutalist influences with a contemporary spiritual identity.

The project was conceived as a solid and protective volume embedded within a dense residential neighborhood. The architects sought to reinterpret traditional sacred architecture using contemporary materials and minimalist forms.

The church emphasizes: silence and contemplation, mass and permanence, the emotional impact of natural light, the relationship between spirituality and urban space. The central atrium functions as both a public gathering space and a threshold into the sacred interior.

Raw concrete defines both the structure and identity of the building. The textured surfaces, marked by timber formwork, reinforce the tactile and timeless character of the architecture. Natural light enters the church through controlled openings and overhead skylights, producing dramatic contrasts between shadow and illumination throughout the day.
