In Nunavik, EVOQ Architecture Designs a Community Greenhouse Dedicated to Food Sovereignty
In Inukjuak, Nunavik, EVOQ Architecture has designed the new Sirivik Community Greenhouse and Kitchen, an innovative facility that places architecture at the service of food security and community life. Completed in spring 2025, the project, initiated in 2017, addresses a major challenge facing northern communities: improving access to fresh, nutritious food while reducing reliance on supplies transported from southern Quebec. Developed for Sirivik, an organization committed to tackling food insecurity since 2013, the building brings together a year-round solar greenhouse, the first of its kind in Nunavik, a hydroponic growing container, a commercial kitchen, and communal dining and gathering spaces.
At the heart of the project, the greenhouse serves as the defining architectural element. Its generous glazed volume, standing out within Inukjuak's built landscape, creates a direct connection between food production areas and spaces dedicated to preparing and sharing meals. Designed to withstand the demanding climatic conditions of northern Quebec, the building prioritizes durability, energy efficiency, and ease of operation. Beyond its primary role in food production, the facility accommodates educational, cultural, and community activities, transforming food cultivation into an opportunity for learning, knowledge sharing, and social connection.
The project is rooted in a participatory design process led by EVOQ Architecture in close collaboration with the Inukjuak community. Involved from the initial feasibility study, the firm organized a series of consultation and co-creation workshops to integrate the needs of future users alongside the cultural and territorial characteristics of Nunavik. This collaborative approach shaped a building firmly grounded in its surroundings, where architectural decisions support the program's broader social ambitions. With the Sirivik Community Greenhouse and Kitchen, EVOQ Architecture demonstrates how architecture developed alongside its users can contribute to food sovereignty and strengthen the resilience of northern communities.
