RAMSGATE HOUSE: A CONTEMPORARY BONDI BEACH VILLA REIMAGINING THE CLASSICAL LOGGIA

Located just moments from Bondi Beach in Sydney, Ramsgate House is a contemporary luxury villa designed by Australian architecture studio Common Office. Created as a permanent family residence, the four-storey home balances privacy, coastal living, and a strong connection to one of Australia’s most iconic beachfront neighbourhoods.

A Modern Interpretation of the Classical Loggia

The project reinterprets the traditional loggia through a series of monumental brick arches that define the facade and create a seamless transition between public and private space. Drawing inspiration from the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, the design introduces depth, shade, and natural climate control while establishing a distinctive architectural identity.
According to the architects, the house sits somewhere between Bondi and Miami, blending coastal character with a refined Art Deco influence.

Designed for Light, Views and Coastal Living

Constructed using traditional double- and triple-skin brickwork, the residence combines durability with high environmental performance. Internally, a sculptural four-storey stairwell brings natural light deep into the home, connecting the living spaces across all levels.
At the top, a copper-clad pavilion offers panoramic views of Bondi Beach and the Pacific Ocean, creating an elevated space for entertaining and relaxation. To the rear, a double-height living area opens onto a swimming pool and landscaped garden planted with native Australian species.

Sustainable Architecture for the Australian Coast

Developed in collaboration with Handelsman + Khaw, the interiors feature a palette of muted, sun-washed materials selected for their durability and suitability to the coastal environment.
Passive design strategies, including deep reveals, shaded thresholds, natural ventilation, and abundant daylight, help improve energy efficiency while enhancing year-round comfort.
