CANTINA MONCALISSE BY STUFLESSER MORODER: A SCULPTURAL WINERY EMBEDDED IN THE LANDSCAPE OF TRENTINO

Set amidst the rolling vineyards of Monte Calisio in northern Italy, Cantina Moncalisse redefines contemporary winery architecture through a seamless dialogue between landscape, craftsmanship, and innovation. Designed by the architecture studio Stuflesser Moroder, the new winery dedicated to Trentodoc sparkling wine emerges as a landmark project where architecture becomes an extension of the terrain itself.

Rather than imposing a singular object onto the hillside, architects David Stuflesser and Nadia Moroder envisioned a building that grows organically from its surroundings. The fluid geometry of the project draws inspiration from the contours of the vineyard, the ancient dry-stone retaining walls that shape the landscape, and the prehistoric cup marks carved into the rocks of Monte Calisio. The resulting architecture appears sculpted by nature, blurring the boundary between built form and topography.

Partially embedded into the hillside, the winery takes advantage of the site's natural thermal conditions while minimizing its visual impact on the environment. This strategy allows the building to achieve both high environmental performance and optimal conditions for the production and aging of traditional-method sparkling wines.

Above ground, visitors are welcomed into a series of light-filled spaces dedicated to hospitality and wine culture. Tasting rooms, a bistro, and panoramic terraces offer uninterrupted views across the surrounding vineyards, transforming the winery into a destination that celebrates both architecture and terroir. Below ground, the technical heart of the project unfolds through production areas, aging cellars, and an impressive barrel hall, where stable temperatures provide ideal conditions for winemaking.

Materiality plays a central role in establishing a connection with the local context. Pigmented concrete infused with porphyry aggregates references the distinctive geological character of the Trentino region, while textured white surfaces evoke the limestone formations of Monte Calisio. Together, these materials create a refined architectural language that is both contemporary and deeply rooted in place.

Beyond its functional requirements, Cantina Moncalisse represents a new generation of winery design one where production, sustainability, hospitality, and storytelling converge into a singular architectural experience. Through its sculptural forms and sensitive integration into the landscape, Stuflesser Moroder has crafted a project that embodies the evolving identity of modern wine architecture while celebrating the cultural and environmental richness of Trentino.
