QUINTA DE ADORIGO WINERY BY ATELIER SÉRGIO REBELO BLENDS SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE WITH THE LANDSCAPE OF PORTUGAL'S DOURO VALLEY

Set among the terraced vineyards of Portugal's Alto Douro Wine Region, the Quinta de Adorigo Winery, designed by Atelier Sérgio Rebelo, demonstrates how contemporary architecture can emerge from centuries of wine-making tradition without competing with the landscape. Located in Tabuaço, within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley, the project forms the centerpiece of a growing wine tourism destination that will eventually include a hotel currently under construction.

Rather than reproducing the iconic geometry of the vineyards, the architects transformed the site's topography into an architectural language that responds equally to the production of wine and to the experience of visitors. The winery unfolds through a sequence of gently curving volumes that descend naturally along the hillside, following the logic of the terrain while accommodating a gravity-fed winemaking process, a production method deeply rooted in the Douro's viticultural heritage. Architecture and function become inseparable, allowing the building itself to participate in the journey of the wine.

The roof reinterprets the region's traditional pitched forms through a flowing timber structure that becomes the project's defining spatial element. Built with glulam frames and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels, the exposed structure creates warm, cathedral-like interiors while expressing the rhythm and movement of the surrounding vineyard terraces. Locally manufactured Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GRC) panels, together with schist, granite and exposed concrete, extend the material palette of the Douro landscape into the architecture, allowing the building to age naturally alongside its environment.

Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of the project, not as an added technology but as a design principle. By partially embedding the winery into the hillside and orienting its primary façade toward the north, the architects harness the thermal inertia of the ground to maintain the wine-aging cellars between 14°C and 16°C, despite outdoor temperatures ranging from -5°C in winter to 45°C in summer. These passive environmental strategies significantly reduce the building's energy demand before mechanical systems are even required.

The environmental approach continues with an integrated energy strategy combining low-enthalpy geothermal technology, centralized energy management, rainwater harvesting, groundwater extraction and water recycling for irrigation, cleaning and fire protection. Permeable outdoor surfaces return rainwater to the surrounding agricultural landscape, while the extensive use of timber instead of concrete reduced embodied carbon emissions by approximately 40 percent compared with a conventional concrete structure.

Beyond its production facilities, Quinta de Adorigo Winery was conceived as a destination for wine tourism in Portugal. Visitors arrive through a reception and wine shop before moving toward panoramic tasting rooms, meeting spaces and generous terraces overlooking the vineyards and the Douro River. Large glazed openings frame the barrel-aging halls and the surrounding landscape, while gardens, walking trails and quiet outdoor spaces invite visitors to experience the vineyard at a slower pace, strengthening the dialogue between architecture, nature and wine culture.

This balance between technical innovation, environmental responsibility and architectural expression has earned the winery widespread international recognition. The project received Architizer A+ Awards Jury Wins in both the Bars & Wineries and Details + Wood categories in 2026, won the Dezeen Awards 2025 in Hospitality, and secured two major victories at the World Architecture Festival 2025 for Production, Energy & Logistics and Best Use of Timber, alongside a Highly Commended distinction for Best Use of Light. Additional honors include the Archisearch Awards, Prémios Espaço, and the Prémio de Arquitetura do Douro, reflecting the project's influence on contemporary winery architecture.
