CASA GRUTA BY SALVADOR ROMÁN & ADELA MORTERA: THE GREEN BRUTALIST HOUSE REDEFINING CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IN MEXICO

Hidden in the historic city of  Valladolid, Yucatán in Mexico, Casa Gruta is unlike any other contemporary residence. Designed by Mexican architects Salvador Román & Adela Mortera, the striking home transforms the raw language of brutalist architecture into an immersive sanctuary inspired by the caves, cenotes and underground landscapes that have shaped the Yucatán Peninsula for millennia. More than a house, it is a shelter, a sculptural experience where architecture, geology and memory merge into a powerful spatial narrative.

Built in the Sisal neighbourhood of Valladolid, Casa Gruta challenges the traditional idea of domestic architecture. Rather than organising spaces around function alone, the project unfolds as a sensory journey inspired by the mysterious sequence of underground caverns. Narrow passages suddenly expand into soaring volumes, intimate spaces dissolve into open-air courtyards, while natural light filters through carefully positioned openings to create an ever-changing choreography of shadows. Every movement through the house evokes the feeling of exploring a hidden grotto carved by nature over thousands of years.

The project draws its conceptual strength from the extraordinary geological identity of the Yucatán Peninsula, a region renowned for its limestone caves and sacred cenotes. For the ancient Maya, these natural formations were far more than sources of water, they were spiritual gateways connecting the earthly and divine worlds. Salvador Román & Adela Mortera reinterpret this cultural and geological heritage through architecture, creating an inhabitable sculpture where massive concrete forms, curved surfaces and mineral textures echo the landscapes concealed beneath the earth's surface.

The arrival itself becomes part of the architectural narrative. An Álamo tree, traditionally believed in Yucatán to signal the presence of underground formations, welcomes visitors before they enter an open-air vestibule. This subtle gesture recalls the rituals once performed before descending into cenotes, transforming the entrance into a symbolic transition between the outside world and an environment designed for contemplation. Instead of crossing a conventional threshold, visitors begin a slow and deliberate passage into a space where time seems to move differently.

Throughout the residence, light becomes an invisible building material. Rather than illuminating every room equally, daylight is carefully controlled to reveal architecture progressively, allowing sculptural walls to emerge from darkness before disappearing again into shadow. As the hours pass, sunlight reshapes every surface, making the passage of time visible inside the home. The dialogue between permanence and ephemerality becomes one of Casa Gruta's defining architectural qualities, proving that atmosphere can be as important as form.

While its monumental geometry places it firmly within the lineage of contemporary brutalism, Casa Gruta introduces an unexpected sense of warmth. Its distinctive green tones, inspired by moss-covered limestone, tropical vegetation and the humid interiors of Yucatán's caves, soften the austerity traditionally associated with brutalist architecture. The restrained palette creates a seamless connection between the building and its natural surroundings, giving rise to what could be described as a new expression of green brutalism, one where monolithic architecture coexists harmoniously with landscape, climate and local identity.

This balance between sculpture and habitation reflects the philosophy of Salvador Román & Adela Mortera, the Mérida-based husband-and-wife architecture studio behind the project. Every commission begins with a narrative rather than a formal aesthetic, allowing each space to emerge from the aspirations, emotions and lifestyles of its future inhabitants. Their work consistently explores the intersection of architecture, storytelling and sensory experience, positioning buildings not simply as shelters but as places capable of transforming the way people perceive the world around them.

In Casa Gruta, that philosophy reaches its most poetic expression. Every material, every opening and every carefully proportioned volume contributes to an atmosphere of introspection. In a time dominated by speed, digital distraction and visual overload, the residence proposes a radically different way of living, one that embraces silence, slowness and the quiet beauty of natural phenomena. The house becomes less a statement of luxury than a meditation on presence, memory and the relationship between humanity and the landscape.

Completed in January 2025, the 254-square-metre residence was realised with interiors by Paulina Román & Andrés Briceño, landscape design by Archivo Vegetal in collaboration with Paulina Román, construction by Concretum, and materials supplied by Kimicolor and Cemex. The evocative photographs by Andrea Cinta and Fabian Martinez capture the project's extraordinary dialogue between architecture, texture and light, revealing a home that feels simultaneously ancient and unmistakably contemporary.

As architects around the world continue to reinterpret brutalism through more sustainable and emotionally driven approaches, Casa Gruta stands among the most remarkable residential projects completed in Mexico in recent years.
