CASA DE MÚSICA, NACAJUCA: COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE BY GABRIELA CARRILLO IN MEXICO

Located in the municipality of Nacajuca, Tabasco, Mexico, Casa de Música is a cultural and community facility designed by Gabriela Carrillo and Colectivo C733. Conceived as more than a music school, the project serves as a flexible civic space where education, culture, and social interaction converge through architecture that is deeply rooted in its local context.

Built on the foundations of a pre-existing community structure, the project embraces adaptive reuse as a key design strategy. Rather than replacing what was already there, the architects chose to preserve and reactivate the site's collective memory while minimizing the environmental impact of construction. This approach reflects a broader commitment to sustainability, resource efficiency, and social continuity.

The building is organized around a large open hall that functions as a multipurpose venue capable of accommodating music rehearsals, performances, workshops, educational programs, cultural events, and community gatherings. Its spatial flexibility allows the building to adapt to changing needs while encouraging continuous public engagement throughout the year.

Responding to the tropical climate of Tabasco, the architecture prioritizes passive environmental strategies. Generous openings promote natural cross-ventilation, while the expansive roof structure provides protection from intense sunlight and seasonal rainfall. The resulting interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces creates a comfortable and welcoming environment that reinforces the connection between architecture, climate, and community life.

Casa de Música exemplifies Gabriela Carrillo's architectural philosophy, which focuses on creating meaningful public spaces that strengthen social bonds and improve everyday life. Rather than pursuing formal expression or iconic imagery, the project emphasizes spatial quality, material honesty, environmental responsiveness, and collective use.
