ECOPARQUE BACALAR BY GABRIELA CARRILLO AND COLECTIVO C733: THE MEXICAN ARCHITECTURE PROJECT REDEFINING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM THROUGH DISAPPEARING DESIGN

 

In Bacalar, in southeastern Mexico, architecture no longer attempts to produce an image. Instead, it tries to reduce its own presence. EcoParque Bacalar, designed by Gabriela Carrillo and the collective C733, embodies a rare position in contemporary architecture: to intervene without occupying, to build without imposing, and to reveal a territory without transforming it into scenery.

 

The project emerges within the growing tourist pressure surrounding the Bacalar Lagoon, which has progressively become one of Quintana Roo’s most photographed destinations. While many tourism developments respond to the value of a landscape through heavy infrastructure and visual spectacle, EcoParque Bacalar adopts the opposite logic. The architectural gesture here is less about addition and more about subtraction. Reducing artificial surfaces. Limiting foundations. Avoiding architectural mass in favor of a minimal territorial passage. This position generates an architecture that is almost silent. A raised wooden pathway slowly moves through mangroves and wetlands without monumentality or signature effects. The project refuses the autonomous object. It does not seek to exist independently from the landscape, but rather to become a mechanism for reading the natural environment itself.

 

This shift is significant. For decades, tropical architecture has often been constructed around visibility: expansive roofs, spectacular structures, waterfront resorts, and the aesthetics of climate luxury. EcoParque Bacalar operates in complete opposition to this approach. The experience it proposes is based on restraint. Visitors are not positioned in front of the landscape; they are gradually absorbed into it. The promenade becomes less a circulation device and more a perceptual instrument. Slowness plays a central role. The elevated structures are not only intended to preserve the wetlands beneath them; they also alter the body’s physical relationship to the site. One never fully enters the territory. Instead, it is crossed carefully, almost cautiously.

 

This economy of means gives the project an unusual intensity. Architecture ceases to function as a volume and instead becomes an atmospheric condition. Shadows, humidity, natural ventilation, the texture of timber, and filtered light passing through mangroves all shape the spatial experience more than formal gestures ever could.

 

The structural system reinforces this discreet radicality. Supporting elements simultaneously assume multiple functions in order to reduce material consumption. The construction logic produces a form of precision where every intervention appears calibrated to minimize physical impact on the site. Yet the significance of EcoParque Bacalar extends beyond ecology alone. The project also formulates an implicit critique of the contemporary relationship between architecture and nature. Many projects still speak of “connection to the landscape” while profoundly transforming it. Here, architecture accepts withdrawal. The landscape is no longer a backdrop used to enhance architecture; architecture itself becomes secondary.

This inversion also transforms the question of tourism. Instead of encouraging rapid visual consumption through viewpoints, scenography, and image production, the project introduces a slower and almost contemplative experience. The territory does not reveal itself immediately. It unfolds progressively through a more attentive relationship with biological rhythms and environmental fragility.

 

The presence of stromatolites around the lagoon intensifies this reading even further. These microbial formations, among the oldest visible life forms on Earth, suddenly shift the temporal scale of the project. Faced with organisms whose existence spans millions of years, architecture appears fragile, temporary, and almost provisional.

 

This is perhaps where the true strength of EcoParque Bacalar lies: in its ability to produce an architecture that accepts not dominating the territory. The project seeks neither spectacle nor environmental iconography. Instead, it develops a controlled form of disappearance in which building becomes a way of organizing a more sensitive relationship with the living world. At a time when sustainable architecture is often reduced to technical performance or environmental certification, EcoParque Bacalar suggests another possible direction: an architecture capable of voluntarily reducing its own weight on the planet.
