In Guimarães, northern Portugal, Atelier Sérgio Rebelo is designing a contemporary winery that brings together Vinho Verde production, contemporary art and the gastronomic heritage of the Minho. Defined by its angular concrete structure, extensive green roof and carefully controlled natural light, Quinta de São Gião reimagines the relationship between winery architecture, landscape and cultural experience.
In the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal, architecture and winemaking converge in a project that seeks to give new meaning to an increasingly fragmented landscape. Designed by Atelier Sérgio Rebelo, Adega de São Gião is a 2,083-square-metre winery located in Guardizela, near Guimarães. Conceived for an art collector and planned in two phases, the project extends beyond the technical requirements of wine production to establish a place where agriculture, art and gastronomy become part of a shared cultural identity.
The site reflects a familiar condition in the suburban territories of northern Portugal, where small residential buildings coexist with large industrial structures, often without a clear relationship between them. In Guardizela, this fragmented urban fabric has gradually weakened the sense of a coherent centre. Rather than introducing an isolated architectural object, Atelier Sérgio Rebelo approaches the project as an opportunity to restore continuity between the built environment, the agricultural landscape and the region's traditions.
“Architecture is not merely the act of creating a new space; it is often about clarifying the one that is already there,” explains Sérgio Rebelo, founder of the studio. At Quinta de São Gião, this principle becomes the foundation of an architectural language grounded in material honesty, functional clarity and a considered relationship with its surroundings.
A Contemporary Winery Rooted in the Landscape
The vineyard provides the site's natural rhythm, while the building acts as a unifying element. Its low, horizontal profile follows the slope of the terrain, establishing a clear architectural presence without competing with the surrounding landscape. A distinctive triangular geometry gives the volume its identity, balancing a strong, angular silhouette with a restrained integration into the Minho countryside.
The choice of in-situ cast concrete reinforces this approach. Durable and structurally expressive, the material responds to the technical and thermal requirements of contemporary winemaking while establishing a direct relationship with the granite geology characteristic of the region. The building's solid façades convey a sense of permanence, positioning the winery as a lasting presence within a territory shaped by agricultural practices and changing patterns of development.
Above the concrete structure, an extensive green roof, punctuated by six skylights, softens the building's profile and strengthens its connection with the landscape. Rather than treating the roof as a purely technical element, the design uses it as an architectural interface between the winery and its surroundings. The result is a horizontal volume that appears embedded in the terrain, balancing the demands of industrial production with a more contemplative reading of the site.
The project also carries a wider territorial ambition. By creating a destination beyond the historic centre of Guimarães, Quinta de São Gião seeks to encourage visitors to explore the rural interior of the region, contributing to a more decentralised model of cultural and wine tourism.
Natural Light at the Heart of the Winery
Inside, the architectural strategy centres on three openings that bring natural light into the technical core of the building without compromising the thermal envelope required for wine production. These openings serve a practical purpose, but their significance extends beyond illumination. They establish a changing relationship with the outside world, registering the passage of time, the shifting weather and the changing quality of daylight.
At the centre of the winery, a gathering space is surrounded by custom-designed stainless-steel tanks. The juxtaposition of industrial equipment and carefully controlled natural light creates an atmosphere that moves beyond the conventional image of a production facility. Here, architecture becomes a means of shaping the experience of the winemaking process itself.
The interior is organised around a compact, centralised layout, divided into three functional wings. Grape reception and processing are positioned to support an efficient production flow, while storage and ageing occupy areas selected for their thermal stability. A dedicated reception and wine tourism area connects the technical operations of the winery with the surrounding landscape and its visitors.
This arrangement reflects a broader architectural principle: the building's public dimension does not exist separately from its productive function. Instead, both are brought together within a coherent spatial organisation, allowing the workings of the winery to remain central to the visitor experience.
Where Winemaking Meets Contemporary Art
One of the defining aspects of Adega de São Gião is its integration of an art collection into the winery's visitor centre. Conceived for an art collector, the project brings contemporary art into direct contact with the processes and environments of wine production, establishing a dialogue between two practices that share a concern for time, preservation and perception.
A cellar and an art gallery may appear to serve different purposes, yet both depend on carefully managed environmental conditions and invite a particular kind of attention. Both require a certain degree of silence, a sensitivity to material and an appreciation of how objects change meaning through their surroundings.
At São Gião, this parallel becomes an integral part of the architectural concept. Art is not simply added to the building as decoration; it contributes to the identity of a place where production, contemplation and cultural exchange can coexist. The winery becomes both a working agricultural facility and a setting for encounters with art, broadening the traditional understanding of wine tourism.
The project is founded on three interconnected pillars, oenology, art and gastronomy, that inform its programme and its relationship with the wider estate.
Architecture, Gastronomy and the Heritage of the Minho
The winery is located alongside Restaurante São Gião, an established destination for regional Minho cuisine. This proximity creates a direct connection between wine production and the culinary traditions of northern Portugal, reinforcing the relationship between the estate's agricultural identity and its gastronomic culture.
Traditional dishes such as rojões and arroz de pica-no-chão form part of this regional heritage, in which local ingredients, agricultural knowledge and conviviality remain closely intertwined. By bringing wine, food and art into a shared setting, Quinta de São Gião positions architecture as a mediator between these traditions and contemporary cultural life.
The project is also integrated into the official Vinho Verde wine routes, placing it within a broader network of destinations that explore the region's viticultural identity. Its location, approximately 15 minutes from central Guimarães and 35 minutes from Citânia de Briteiros, offers an opportunity to connect wine tourism with the area's historical and cultural attractions.
Guimarães, recognised internationally for its historic heritage and its role as European Capital of Culture in 2012, provides a wider cultural context for the project. Against this background, Quinta de São Gião seeks to contribute to the diversification of regional tourism by directing attention towards the rural landscape and the contemporary architectural projects emerging within it.
A New Architectural Landmark for Vinho Verde
Currently under construction, Quinta de São Gião proposes a model for contemporary winery architecture in which technical performance, landscape integration and cultural programming are considered as parts of the same architectural response.
Its significance lies not only in the production of Vinho Verde, but also in the way it brings together different dimensions of the region's identity. The horizontal concrete volume, the green roof and the controlled use of natural light establish a clear architectural framework, while the integration of art and gastronomy opens the building to a wider public.
For Atelier Sérgio Rebelo, the project is ultimately about creating the conditions for a place to develop a stronger identity. Rather than imposing a new centre through scale alone, the architecture seeks to establish one through the relationships it makes possible, between workers and visitors, production and contemplation, the vineyard and the surrounding landscape.
At Quinta de São Gião, the winery becomes more than an agricultural building. It is conceived as a meeting point between architecture, wine and art, offering a contemporary interpretation of the Minho's enduring traditions and a new destination within Portugal's evolving wine landscape.
