Rural Tourism Houses in Portugal: Adaptive Reuse of a Traditional Stone Dwelling by Paula Pinheiro

Located in the rural landscape of Viana do Castelo, in Portugal, this project by Paula Pinheiro transforms a traditional house into two independent units dedicated to rural tourism. The intervention explores a sensitive balance between heritage preservation and contemporary architecture, creating a refined dialogue between the existing structure and new additions.

The original stone walls are preserved and reused as the structural base of the project, while a discreet steel system reinforces the building. Two compact dwellings are inserted within the volume, each including a living space, bedroom, and bathroom. The latter is housed within a distinct concrete extension at the rear, clearly expressing the contemporary layer of the intervention.

A shared outdoor space acts as a threshold between the old and the new, enhancing spatial continuity and social interaction. The façades are wrapped in timber cladding applied over large glazed surfaces, filtering light and views while ensuring privacy. This architectural strategy establishes a strong connection with the surrounding landscape, based on the principle of “seeing without being seen.”

Through a restrained material palette, stone, wood, concrete, and steel, the project achieves a subtle synthesis of vernacular architecture, sustainability, and modern design language. Recognized in the Habitar Portugal 2006–2008 selection, this project stands as a compelling example of adaptive reuse in rural contexts.
