VERTICAL HOUSE IN TOKYO: COMPACT LIVING AND SPATIAL INNOVATION BY RYUE NISHIZAWA

Located in the dense urban fabric of Tokyo, the Vertical House by Ryue Nishizawa redefines residential architecture through an innovative approach to space, light, and verticality. Designed for a narrow urban plot, the project explores how compact living can generate rich spatial experiences.

The house is conceived as a stacked sequence of independent yet interconnected rooms, arranged vertically rather than horizontally. Each level accommodates a specific function, living, sleeping, bathing, while maintaining visual continuity through carefully positioned openings and voids. This layered organization creates a sense of openness despite the limited footprint.

Large windows and subtle shifts in floor levels allow natural light to penetrate deep into the building, enhancing the perception of space and connecting the interior with the surrounding cityscape. The vertical circulation becomes a central architectural element, transforming movement into an experiential journey.

Materially, the project embraces a minimalist and refined aesthetic, with light surfaces and precise detailing that amplify brightness and spatial clarity. The structure remains discreet, allowing proportions, light, and voids to define the architecture.

With the Vertical House, Nishizawa proposes a radical yet elegant response to urban constraints, demonstrating how density, minimalism, and flexibility can coexist within a compact residential design. The project stands as a key reference in contemporary Japanese architecture and innovative small-scale housing.
